Sin City

December 15th, 2008 by Boris Glumpler | Category: Travelogues 2
Sin City Bangkok, Southeast Asia's Sin City and at it's travellers heart you find Khao San Road, where you can see and hear it all. Languages and people from all over the world. This little 300 meter stretch of western backpacker heaven is not part of Thailand proper. It seems to follow it's own rules. There is the English traveller, newly arrived, red eyed and jet lagged, with hopes to follow in the steps of Alex Garland's character Richard. There are well-off thai couples, tourists themselves in...

Rubber Time

Rubber Time I left Koh Lanta on a sunny day around 11 in the morning. My mate, who had been over from Australia, dropped me at the little car ferries that operate between the two Lantas and the mainland. My plan was easy. Hitchhike to Trang and then get a train up to Bangkok. On the ferry I sat down on a little bench next to some Thais and chatted to them a bit. I decided that rather than trying to hail a car straight away I'd walk a bit first. After maybe ten meters a car with the Thais I had been chatting...

Family Holiday – Singapore Once all of us had left the tranquillity of Pulau Tioman we hopped on a boat and a couple buses and made our way all the way to little big Singapore. Arriving at this city state, I always feel a bit intimidated. The first thing you get to see is this medieval looking fortress of an immigration point, that screams at you from every corner, that you'll get your head chopped off for trafficking drugs. Not that I do that. Nor do I spit on the floor or chew some gum or dance naked in the streets....

Family Holiday – Pulau Tioman

Family Holiday – Pulau Tioman My brother works at the airport in Munich and he gets good travel deals out of it, so when we arrived at their hotel in KL I couldn't believe my eyes. The thing stood almost next to the Petronas Towers and the lobby was all marble and people calling me 'Sir' although I was still in my terrorist disguise. I have to say I did feel a bit uncomfortable, so the first thing I did in that shiny bathroom was shave, head and beard. And maybe shopping wasn't such a bad idea after all! In the few days...

Family Holiday

October 5th, 2008 by Boris Glumpler | Category: Travelogues 1
Family Holiday It had been a long time since I had seen any of my family. Almost one and a half years. I was a bit apprehensive and sweating quite badly when I ran into the arrival hall. I had to run, because I was really late. When I booked the bus ticket to the airport, nobody had told me that there are two terminals and that those two terminals are ages apart from each other. I had to run like crazy after the second bus that would take me to KLIA. That's why I was sweating, not because of the apprehension. I...
