Children are awesome. Especially when travelling in Asia. It is very rare that I pass up an opportunity to take a few snapshots of kids. Usually they follow me around and yell ‘Photo, photo, Mister!’. And all they want in return is to have a look at the little screen on the back. Then they go on telling me the news of their day, blissfully unaware that I don’t understand a word. It always makes me chuckle.

These four girls from the little village of Lamalera wanted their picture taken, but always got scared and ran off. Eventually they managed to stand still for a few seconds.

In Asia you see a lot of girls, kids themselves, looking after their younger siblings. They expertly carry them around on the hip, pick them up after they fell over and feed them rice and some fish.

These two cheeky boys in Dili wouldn’t stop talking. All I could understand was ‘photo’ once in a while. They seemed like tough little cookies. I suppose they would have to be living in one of the many refugee tent cities.

My 5 Most Hilarious Travel Photos

So, here’s my entry for Ian’s Most Hilarious Travel Photo Contest over at Brave New Traveler.

This photo is from a time when there wasn’t a Hofbräuhaus at every corner of the world. When I walked past this establishment, I just had to get my picture taken with this funny Thai maetre d’ in his traditional Bavarian costume.

My friend Bibiana took this picture on what was probably the most boring dive of my life. Well, it was until Bibiana started an underwater fight, ripping my mask off, trying to turn off my air, pulling on my fins. This fight eventually led to a complete underwater equipment exchange (except our wetsuits and dive computers). This is my victory dance photo…

My friend Åsa wants to be reborn a mermaid in her next life. On Seraya, where the only things you can do all day is sip shandy and watch the cook chase an unlucky chicken for dinner through the bushes, I decided to make her dream come true in this life. And for good measure I gave her a couple of huge boobs as well…

Some friends and me had organized a huge bbq on the beach with tasty parrot fish, red and white snapper, loads of tuna and tons of squid. As soon as we were finished an army of little scavengers marched in and claimed their share…

The only way this Vietnamese barkeeper would show us what exactly was in that jar apart from the snakes was to promise him to order a round of shots afterwards. Turned out it was a dead crow with feathers and all…
